🚗 Number Plate Format

How to Read an Indian Number Plate

Indian vehicle registration numbers follow a standard format. Understanding this helps you enter the number correctly on the portal.

MH 01 AB 1234
MH
State Code
2-letter code for state of registration
01
RTO Code
2-digit code for the specific RTO
AB
Series
2-letter series assigned sequentially
1234
Unique Number
4-digit unique number for the vehicle
💡 How to enter it on the portal: Always enter the registration number without spaces on the Vahan portal and SMS service — for example, enter MH01AB1234 not MH 01 AB 1234. Both formats usually work, but no-space format is more reliable.
🌐 Method 1

Method 1 — Vahan Portal (Most Complete Details)

The Vahan National Register portal gives the most comprehensive vehicle details — including insurance validity, PUC status, fitness certificate, hypothecation, and number of previous owners. A free account is required.

  • 1
Open your browser and go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in/nrservices. This is the official Vahan National Register portal.
  • 2
On the homepage, click on "Know Your Vehicle Details" from the menu or the Informational Services section.
  • 3
Login or Create Account: Enter your mobile number and click Generate OTP. If you are a new user, click "Create Account" — enter your mobile number, email ID, name, and set a password. Your account is ready instantly.
  • 4
After logging in, the RC Status / Vehicle Search page will open. Enter the vehicle registration number in the search field exactly as it appears on the number plate (e.g., MH01AB1234).
  • 5
Enter the captcha code shown on screen and click "Vahan Search".
  • 6
The complete vehicle details will appear on screen — owner name (partially masked), vehicle make and model, fuel type, registration date, RC validity, insurance status, PUC status, fitness certificate, hypothecation details, and RTO information.
  • 7
Save or screenshot the details for your records. Do not share the full owner details publicly — the portal's privacy masking is there for a reason.
Alternative direct URL: You can also access vehicle details from the main Parivahan portal — go to parivahan.gov.in → Online Services → Vehicle Related Services → Select your state → Services → Additional Services → Know Your Vehicle Details.
📞 Method 2

Method 2 — SMS (No Internet Needed, Fastest)

This is the quickest method — no internet, no app, no login required. Anyone with a basic mobile phone can use it. Standard SMS charges apply.

RTO: MH-01 Mumbai Central

How to Use the SMS Service

  • 1
Open your phone's Messages / SMS app.
  • 2
Type: VAHAN [space] [Vehicle Registration Number]
    Example: VAHAN DL01AB1234
  • 3
Send the SMS to 7738299899 (or 07738299899 — both work).
  • 4
You will receive a reply SMS within 30–60 seconds containing the vehicle owner name (partial), make and model, registration date, RC validity, insurance status, fuel type, and RTO name.
📞 Cost: Standard SMS rates apply (typically ₹0.25 per SMS or free if your plan includes SMS). The SMS service uses data from the national Vahan database and works for most registered vehicles across India. It may not work for very old vehicles whose records have not been digitised by the RTO.
📱 Method 3

Method 3 — mParivahan App (Best for Regular Use)

The official mParivahan app (NextGen version) provides vehicle details in a clean, easy-to-read format directly on your smartphone. It is the best option if you regularly check vehicle details.

  • 1
Download the NextGen mParivahan app from the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iPhone). Search for "mParivahan NIC eGov" — install the official free app.
  • 2
Open the app and register with your mobile number. Enter the OTP to verify. The registration takes less than a minute.
  • 3
From the app home screen, tap on "Informational Services".
  • 4
Tap on "RC Search" (Registration Certificate Search).
  • 5
Enter the vehicle registration number (e.g., MH01AB1234) and tap Search.
  • 6
The vehicle details will appear on screen — owner name (partial), make and model, engine and chassis number, registration details, insurance and PUC validity, and RTO information. You can take a screenshot or share the details.
📱 The mParivahan app also lets you store your own digital RC and DL (legally valid), receive eChallan notifications for your vehicle, and pay challans — all in one place. If you own a vehicle in India, this app is worth having installed permanently.
🏢 Method 4

Method 4 — Visit RTO Offline

If online methods are not working, the record appears incomplete, or you need full unmasked owner details for a legal matter (such as a hit-and-run, accident dispute, or vehicle purchase verification), you can visit the RTO directly.

  • 1
Identify the RTO that issued the vehicle's registration — the first 4 characters of the number plate tell you (e.g., MH01 = Mumbai Central RTO).
  • 2
Visit that RTO during working hours (typically Monday–Friday, 10 AM – 5 PM) and approach the Enquiry Counter or RC Services desk.
  • 3
Provide the vehicle registration number and your own photo ID (Aadhaar Card or any government-issued ID).
  • 4
For a formal request (such as for a legal case or police FIR), you may need to submit a written application stating the reason for needing the owner's details. The RTO officer will check the system and provide the information.
⚠️ Full owner details are not given freely. The RTO will only share complete owner information for a legitimate, verifiable reason — such as an accident, legal dispute, vehicle purchase verification, or police referral. For routine checks, the online methods (Vahan portal, SMS) are sufficient.
🔒 Privacy

Why is the Owner Name Shown Masked?

The Vahan portal shows the vehicle owner's name in a partially masked format (e.g., R**** K****) — the first letter of each name part is shown, and the rest are replaced with asterisks. This is an intentional privacy protection measure introduced by MoRTH.

Why Was This Done?

In the past, full owner names were publicly visible on the Vahan portal. This led to misuse — people were using the information for stalking, harassment, unwanted sales calls, and other privacy violations. In response, MoRTH updated the portal to mask the owner's name for all public queries.

Who Can See the Full Name?

  • Traffic police — using their official Vahan access credentials
  • Courts and lawyers — through a formal RTO data request for legal proceedings
  • Insurance companies — for claim verification purposes
  • The vehicle owner themselves — when logged in with their registered mobile number on the Vahan portal
👥 For used car buyers: If you are buying a second-hand vehicle and want to verify ownership, ask the seller to show you their original RC (Registration Certificate). The RC shows the full registered owner name. Cross-check this against what appears on the Vahan portal (the partial name should match). If it doesn't match, do not proceed with the purchase.
💡 Use Cases

When to Use This Service

🚘 Before Buying a Used Vehicle

Always check the registration number on the Vahan portal before buying any second-hand vehicle. You can verify the make and model match what the seller claims, check how many previous owners the vehicle has had, confirm the RC is valid and not expired, verify that insurance is active, check if there is any hypothecation (bank loan) still recorded, and confirm the vehicle is not blacklisted or under seizure.

🚗 After a Hit-and-Run or Accident

If another vehicle hits yours and drives away, note the registration number immediately. Use the SMS method (VAHAN [number] to 7738299899) to get basic details instantly — even without internet. This information is important for filing an FIR and insurance claims.

📜 For Insurance Claims and Disputes

If you are filing an accident claim and need to identify the other party's vehicle details or insurance provider, the Vahan portal shows insurance validity and the insurer's name (in some cases). This is useful for third-party insurance claims.

📋 Traffic Police Verification

Traffic police across India use the Vahan database to verify vehicle documents on the spot. Your digital RC in mParivahan is verified against the same database. If your RC is expired or insurance has lapsed, it will show up in the Vahan lookup.

🔌 Checking Your Own Vehicle's Records

You can use the portal to check if your own vehicle's records are correct — verify that your insurance, PUC, and fitness certificate dates are accurately recorded in the central Vahan database. Discrepancies should be reported to your RTO for correction.

⚡ Issues & Fixes

Common Issues and Fixes

❌ "Record Not Found" for a Valid Number Plate

This usually means the vehicle's records have not been digitised or migrated to the central Vahan database by the issuing RTO. This is more common for vehicles registered before 2000, or in states where RTO digitisation was slower. The physical RC is still valid — the database gap is an RTO-side issue.

Fix: Visit the RTO that issued the registration and request a database update. Once updated (usually within a few days), the Vahan portal will show the records.

❌ Insurance Shows Expired But Owner Claims It's Valid

This means the insurance renewal has not been updated in the Vahan database by the insurer. Most insurance companies update the database within 24–48 hours of renewal, but sometimes there is a delay.

Fix: The vehicle owner should contact their insurance company and ask them to update the policy details on the Vahan portal. The insurer is responsible for reporting active policies to the database.

❌ SMS to 7738299899 Not Getting a Reply

The SMS number may occasionally be down, or the vehicle's records may not be in the Vahan database.

Fix: Try the Vahan portal instead. If your SMS plan does not include outgoing SMS, standard SMS charges will apply — ensure your balance is sufficient. Try again after a few hours if the number is temporarily down.

❌ Captcha Error on Vahan Portal

The Vahan portal captcha can be difficult to read. Click the refresh icon next to the captcha to generate a new one. Use Google Chrome on desktop for the best portal experience.

❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is checking vehicle owner details by number plate free?

Yes. Checking vehicle details on the Vahan portal, mParivahan app, and via SMS (standard SMS charges apply) is completely free. There is no government fee for querying the Vahan database for informational purposes.

Q2. Can I find out if a used car has a loan or hypothecation on it?

Yes. The Vahan portal shows if a vehicle has an active hypothecation (bank loan) recorded against it. If hypothecation is shown, it means the vehicle is under a bank's charge and you should not buy it without getting a proper NOC from the bank and completing the hypothecation removal process.

Q3. Why does the portal show the owner name with asterisks?

MoRTH introduced name masking on the Vahan portal to protect owner privacy after the full name display was being misused for stalking, spam calls, and harassment. The partial name (first and last letter visible) is sufficient to cross-verify identity without exposing full personal information publicly.

Q4. Can I check the challan history of a vehicle by number plate?

Yes. Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in, enter the vehicle registration number, and all pending and paid challans linked to that vehicle will be displayed. This is especially useful when buying a used vehicle to ensure there are no outstanding fines.

Q5. How do I check if a vehicle is stolen?

The Vahan portal does not directly flag stolen vehicles in public queries. To check if a vehicle is reported stolen, contact the local police station or check with the state police's online vehicle theft database (available in some states). Always verify the chassis number and engine number from the RC match the actual vehicle when buying second-hand.

Q6. Can I check vehicle details for a vehicle registered in another state?

Yes. The Vahan National Register is a centralised database covering all states and union territories. You can check details for any registered vehicle in India regardless of the state it was registered in.

Q7. My own vehicle's details are incorrect on the Vahan portal. How do I correct them?

Visit the RTO where your vehicle is registered with your original RC and supporting documents (proof of correct details). Request a correction in the Vahan database. Some corrections (like address change or mobile number update) can also be done online via the Vahan portal under Vehicle Related Services.

Q8. Can I check insurance details for any vehicle by number plate?

Yes. The Vahan portal shows the insurance validity date. You can also check insurance details via the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) portal at iib.gov.in using the vehicle registration number — this shows the insurer name and policy validity.
