📅 Updated: April 2026 📱 Works on Mobile 🌐 sarathi.parivahan.gov.in
🔸 Quick Answer: Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in → Select your state → Click "Application Status" → Enter your Application Number and Date of Birth → Click Submit. Your DL status will appear instantly on screen.

What is DL Application Status?

When you apply for a Driving Licence (DL) through the Sarathi Parivahan portal, your application goes through several stages — from document verification to driving test, approval, printing, and finally dispatch by post. The DL Application Status shows exactly which stage your application is currently at.

You can check the status for all types of driving licence applications, including:

  • Learner's Licence (LL) application
  • Permanent Driving Licence (new DL) application
  • DL Renewal application
  • Duplicate Driving Licence application
  • DL address change or other modification requests

Checking your DL status online is free, available 24 hours a day, and takes less than two minutes. You do not need to visit the RTO to find out where your application stands.

What You Need Before You Start

Before checking your DL application status online, keep the following details ready:

📄 Application Number

The unique reference number given to you when you submitted your DL application. It is printed on your receipt or sent to your registered mobile via SMS.

🎊 Date of Birth

Your date of birth as entered during the application. This is used along with your application number to verify your identity on the portal.

📷 Captcha Code

A security code displayed on the portal page. You need to enter this correctly to proceed. It refreshes if you cannot read it clearly.

🌎 State of Application

The state where you applied for your DL. You must select the correct state on the Sarathi portal before your application record can be found.

💡 Don't have your Application Number? Scroll down to Method 4 — we explain how to check status without an application number using your name and date of birth.

Method 1 — Check via Sarathi Parivahan Portal (Recommended)

This is the fastest and most reliable method. The Sarathi portal is the official driving licence management system and gives real-time updates directly from the RTO database.

1

Open the official Sarathi portal. Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in in your browser. Make sure the URL ends in .gov.in.

2

Select your state. Choose the state where you originally applied for your driving licence. Selecting the wrong state will show no results.

3

Click on "Application Status". Look for the "Application Status" option in the top menu under "Apply Online" or the main navigation bar.

4

Enter your Application Number and Date of Birth. Type your application number exactly as it appears on your receipt. Enter your date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY) and the captcha code.

5

Click "Submit". The portal will display your current DL application status along with any remarks from the RTO.

6

Note down the status and any remarks. Take a screenshot or note the current status. If the status says "Pending" or "Action Required", read the remarks carefully.

💡 Pro Tips
  • Always use the official sarathi.parivahan.gov.in — beware of fake lookalike websites
  • If the portal is slow, try accessing it early morning (before 9 AM) for faster response
  • Status updates may take 24–48 hours to reflect after an RTO action

Method 2 — Check via Parivahan.gov.in

You can also reach the same Application Status page through the main Parivahan portal. This is useful if you are already on the Parivahan website for other services.

1

Visit parivahan.gov.in and look for the "Online Services" menu at the top of the homepage.

2

Click on "Driving Licence Related Services" from the dropdown menu. This will redirect you to the Sarathi portal.

3

Select your state from the dropdown list on the Sarathi page.

4

Click "Application Status", enter your Application Number, Date of Birth, and captcha, then click Submit to view your status.

Method 3 — Check via mParivahan App

The mParivahan mobile app lets you check your DL status directly from your smartphone without opening a browser.

1

Download the mParivahan app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Search for "mParivahan NIC eGov" — it is a free, official government app.

2

Open the app and register with your mobile number. Enter the OTP received to verify your number.

3

Tap on "RC/DL Status" or the driving licence section from the app's home screen.

4

Enter your Application Number or DL Number along with your date of birth, then tap Submit. Your current application status will be displayed on screen.

📱 The mParivahan app also lets you store a legally valid digital copy of your DL and RC, receive challan notifications, and check vehicle details — all in one place.

Method 4 — Check Without Application Number

If you have lost your application receipt or do not remember your application number, you can still find your application using your name and date of birth.

1

Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state.

2

In the top navigation menu, click on "Others" to open a dropdown list of additional services.

3

Click on "Find Application Number" from the dropdown list.

4

Enter your full name, date of birth, and the mobile number linked to your application. Click Submit. The portal will display your application number if a matching record is found.

5

Use the retrieved application number to go back to the Application Status page and check your current DL status as described in Method 1.

Method 5 — Check Offline at the RTO

If the online portal is not working, your details are not matching, or you need more clarity on a pending action, visiting your RTO in person is always an option.

1

Visit your local RTO — the same Regional Transport Office where you originally submitted your application.

2

Go to the Enquiry Counter or the Help Desk and tell the officer you want to check your DL application status.

3

Provide your Application Number and ID proof (Aadhaar Card or any government-issued ID). The officer will check the system and give you the latest status.

🕒 RTO visits are particularly useful when your status shows "Document Verification Pending", "Biometric Pending", or "Action Required" — the officer can tell you exactly what document or action is needed.

Understanding Your DL Status Messages

When you check your status, the portal will show one of the following status messages. Here is what each one means and what action you should take:

Common Problems and Solutions

❌ "Record Not Found" Error

This is the most common issue. It usually occurs when:

  • You have selected the wrong state — make sure to select the state where the application was submitted
  • Your application number has a typo — double-check against your original receipt
  • Your date of birth does not match the one entered during the application
  • The application was submitted very recently and has not yet been updated in the system (wait 24–48 hours)

🔒 Portal Not Loading or Server Error

The Sarathi portal can be slow during peak hours (9 AM to 1 PM on weekdays). Try accessing it in the early morning or late evening. If the issue persists, clear your browser cache or try a different browser.

🕑 Status Not Changing for Many Days

If your status has not changed for more than 15–20 working days, it is time to take action:

  • Call the Parivahan helpline at 1800-180-0151 (toll-free)
  • Email helpdesk-sarathi@gov.in with your application number and state
  • Visit your RTO in person with your application receipt and ID proof

📧 OTP Not Received on Mobile

Make sure the mobile number registered with your Parivahan/Sarathi account is correct and active. You can update your mobile number on the Sarathi portal without visiting the RTO — use the "Update Mobile Number" option under the portal's services.

⚠️ Beware of fake websites that claim to help you check DL status for a fee. The official status check is completely free on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in. Never share your Aadhaar number or payment details on unofficial websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How long does it take to get a driving licence after the test?

It generally takes 2 to 4 weeks for the RTO to process and dispatch your driving licence after you pass the driving test. Processing time may vary depending on your state and the RTO's workload.

Q2. Can I check my DL status without the application number?

Yes. Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, select your state, and click on "Others" → "Find Application Number." Enter your name, date of birth, and registered mobile number to retrieve your application number.

Q3. My status shows "Dispatched" but I have not received my DL. What should I do?

When the status shows "Dispatched," the RTO would have sent a Speed Post tracking number to your registered mobile via SMS. Use it on indiapost.gov.in to track your delivery. If 30+ days have passed, contact your RTO directly.

Q4. Can I download my DL digitally while waiting for the physical card?

Yes. Once your status shows "Approved" or "DL Printed," you can download a legally valid digital copy from the Sarathi portal under "Print DL / DL Extract" or via the mParivahan app or DigiLocker.

Q5. I applied in one state but now live in another. Which state should I select?

Always select the state where you originally submitted your driving licence application — not your current state of residence. Your application record is stored with the RTO of the state where you applied.

Q6. How can I contact Parivahan helpdesk if my issue is not resolved?

Call the toll-free Parivahan helpline at 1800-180-0151 or email helpdesk-sarathi@gov.in. Provide your application number, state, and a clear description of the issue for faster resolution.

Q7. Does checking DL status cost any money?

No. Checking your DL application status on the official Sarathi Parivahan portal and mParivahan app is completely free of charge. Never pay any fee to any website or agent.
